Innova Crysta vs Creta Comparison Review

Toyota Innova Crysta vs Hyundai Creta Comparison Review:

Why are we comparing these two cars?
Creta's range-topping variant, the 'SX O' (diesel) costs 16.95 Lakh, on road, Delhi. Customers looking for the added practicality of 7 seats & Toyota’s flawless reliability, will definitely give the new Innova Crysta a thought. Innova Crysta’s high-end 'ZX' variant retails for a rather steep 23.9 lakh, which is 6 Lakh Rs. more expensive than the Creta, but it has a few extra features like the Knee Airbag, Electric Seats etc. over the Creta. What we are trying to find out is whether the Innova Crysta is worth the extra expense, compared to the Creta. (Creta diesel 'SX Plus AT' automatic costs 16.93 Lakh Rs. while Innova Crysta's 'GX AT' automatic costs 19.55 Lakh, on road, Delhi)

Performance & Drivability:
Innova Crysta’s performance is immensely better than the Creta. There is no getting away from the fact that the Innova Crysta manual has an 800cc bigger engine than the Creta and the Crysta automatic has a 1200 cc bigger engine than the Creta. The Creta has irritating turbo-lag anywhere below 2000 rpm in stark contrast to the Innova Crysta which has absolutely no turbo lag at all. Both cars have excellent overtaking prowess on the highways. But the difference in performance becomes quite apparent when all the seats are occupied.

Power (PS@rpm): Innova Crysta 2.4 – 149@3400, Innova Crysta 2.8 – 177@3400, Creta 1.6 (diesel) - 128@4000
Torque (Nm@rpm): Innova Crysta 2.4 - 343@1200-2800, Innova Crysta 2.8 – 360@1200-2800, Creta 1.6 (diesel) – 265@1900-2750
Kerb Weight (kg): Innova Crysta 2.4 – 1715, Innova Crysta 2.8 - 1795, Creta 1.6 (diesel) - 1290

Fuel Efficiency:
In our real world tests, the Creta manual was consistently 2 kmpl more efficient than the manual Innova Crysta, whereas the Creta automatic was almost 3 kmpl more efficient than the Innova Crysta automatic.

ARAI Mileage (kmpl):
Innova Crysta 2.4 (diesel, manual) – 15.1, Creta 1.6 (diesel, manual) – 19.7
Innova Crysta 2.8 (diesel, automatic) – 14.29, Creta 1.6 (diesel, automatic) – 17.0

Fuel Cost for 75,000 km (in Lakh):
Innova Crysta (diesel, manual) – 2.30, Creta 1.6 (diesel, manual) – 3.00
Innova Crysta (diesel, automatic) – 2.80, Creta 1.6 (diesel, automatic) - 2.60

Space & Comfort:
The sheer space and ergonomic comfort of the Innova Crysta’s cabin is leagues ahead of the Creta. Innova Crysta’s seats are extremely supportive and don’t cause any discomfort even after spending half a day inside the car. Creta’s seats on the other hand lack adequate under-thigh support and have excessively soft cushioning causing fatigue on long journeys. Crysta’s third row of seats are also a small improvement over the old Innova. With all seats in place, Innova has a decent 300 litre boot space, which expands to 800 litres with the seats folded, compared to just 400 litres of space inside the Creta

Length (mm): Innova Crysta – 4735, Creta – 4270
Width (mm): Innova Crysta – 1830, Creta – 1780
Height (mm): Innova Crysta – 1795, Creta – 1630

Ride Quality & Handling:
The way the Innova smothers the potholes and bumps of Indian roads with consummate ease. The Creta on the other hand is just a lookalike SUV, even smaller bumps and undulations tend to unsettle it quite easily. Innova Crysta is meant to be a composed MPV around corners, but if asked, it can willingly power-slide in the right hands. The Creta just hates corners. It rolls like a sailboat and transmits absolutely no feel or feedback from the surface to the driver.

Ground Clearance (mm): Innova Crysta – 174, Creta – 190

Tyre Size:
Innova Crysta – 205/65R16 (GX/VX), 215/55R17 (ZX)
Creta - 205/65R16 (Base/SX/SX Plus), 215/60R17 (SX O)

Reliability and After Sales Service:
Hyundai though good, is no match to the bulletproof reliability of the Innova. However, Hyundai’s service reach is wider with 800+ touch points compared to Toyota's 350.

Resale after 5 to 7 years est. (Lakh):
Both cars are bound to hold outstanding resale value thanks to Toyota & Hyundai's exemplary track record at reliability and after sales service as well as the sheer irresistible appeal of both these cars on the Indian customers.
Innova Crysta ZX (Diesel manual) – 14.35, Creta SX O (Diesel manual) – 10.15
Innova Crysta GX AT (Diesel automatic) – 11.75, Creta SX Pus (Diesel automatic) - 10.15

Total Cost of Ownership (in Lakh): (Vehicle Price + Fuel Cost – Resale Value)
Innova Crysta works out to be around 35% or 3.2 Lakh rupees more expensive than the Creta over an ownership of 5 to 7 years.
Innova Crysta ZX (Diesel manual) – 12.35, Creta SX O (Diesel manual) – 9.10
Innova Crysta GX AT (Diesel automatic) – 11.95, Creta SX Plus (Diesel automatic) - 9.40

Verdict:
The Innova Crysta's sheer depth of capabilities is a quantum leap over the Creta. The Creta is typical pseudo-SUV. It just looks like an SUV, but is unable to handle unpaved roads or even light mud and slush as it is based on the i20 hatchback platform. While the Innova Crysta will gobble up almost anything that you throw at it, thanks to its sturdy, pick-up truck based underpinnings and rear wheel drive. Yet the Innova Crysta will also cosset you in the lavish opulence and comfort which can shame many a German Luxury Sedans. Not for nothing do most Mercedes, BMW & Audi owners, keep an Innova handy when they really need to cover long distances by road.
